Be the hero of your own story

Knowing what to say in?presentations can cometimes be a no brainer but often we are left scratching our heads because we don?t have a clue what to say.
There are a couple of tricks that we presenters impossible can use to make the whole presentation process a little bit easier.
Going straight to the point, my suggestion is to run the presentation in the following order:

Introduction
-
Problem ? what is the problem you are talking about
-
Your story ? how you struggled to find a solution to the problem
-
The solution
-
Closing ? end the presentation with a call to action
There are obviously tons of variables and changes but this can be the main format 80% of the time.
Looking at the above presentation format, we can see that the story is integral, the glue that holds it altogether.
Think about the storytelling approach that you have seen in movies ? one of the most popular is the hero story and who wouldn?t want to be the hero of their story (learn more about the hero topic reading the work of Joseph Campbell).

Act as a storyteller throughout your presentation
When we do a presentation, we are acting as a storytellers and we use stories to help other understand us. A story is a tale about an experience ? it links events together in a way that is logical.
We garner facts and information but they only develop meaning through the stories that are told around them. Stories help us imagine and visualise ? they hook the attention of the audience through the use of emotion and they help people to recall what they heard in a presentation.
When using a storytelling approach in your presentation, remember these presentation tips:
Presentation Tip #1 Tie it all together
Your story should fit your presentation.
If it is incongruent, you end up digessing away from the main points and it just won?t work because the audience?s attention is diverted.
Presentation Tip #2 Make them relevant
Make sure that your audience can relate to the stories based on their own experiences. Make sure that each story has a point that is easily understood in the context of your presentation. Make sure that it is a story you feel comfortable telling otherwise it will just looked forced and fake.
Presentation Tip #3 Keep it short and simple
A good presentation tip is to tell a story in +- three minutes. Streamline it and use it clarify a point and then move on. Remember that a story should reinforce a point and not replace information. Don?t use a story to illustrate every point ? it is a technique that is best used sparingly.
Presentation Tip #4 Use action
Something should happen to the characters in your story. This makes them real and the audience will then relate to them.
Presentation Tip #5 Do it with feeling
Make sure you resonate with your audience

Resonate with your listeners. Use your voice, eye contact and gestures to add to the story.
Delivering a compelling and relevan story will give your presentation a personal and human touch.
Learning how to be a good storyteller will thrill and captivate the audience and keep them glued to what you are saying throughout the presentation. So be the hero of the story!
