PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? An Oregon jury ruled Tuesday a problem with an engine was responsible for the 2008 crash of a helicopter that killed nine firefighters during a wildfire in Northern California.

The jury in Portland reached its verdict after a pilot who survived and the widow of one who was killed sued General Electric for $177 million.

The plaintiffs argued the company knew the engines it made for the Sikorsky S-61N helicopter had a design flaw making them unsafe.

GE countered that the helicopter crashed because it was carrying too much weight when it took off after picking up a firefighting crew on the Iron 44 wildfire on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest near Weaverville, Calif.

"They're heroes," said plaintiff's attorney Greg Anderson of the pilots, William Coultas and Roark Schwanenberg. "They saved as many people as they could. They have been pilloried before this."

The chopper was airborne less than a minute when it clipped a tree and fell from the sky, bursting into flames.

Four people survived, including Coultas, of Cave Junction.

The plaintiffs and their families in court on Tuesday dabbed their eyes and exchanged stiff handshakes with GE's attorneys. They declined to speak with reporters after the verdict was read.

After a two-year investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board concluded in 2010 that too much weight and a lack of oversight caused the crash.

The lawsuit was brought by Coultas, his wife and the estate of Schwanenberg, who died.

The jury on Tuesday awarded $28.4 million to the estate. Coultas was awarded $37 million and his wife $4.3 million by the jury.

The jury put most of the blame ? 57 percent ? on GE, but also found the helicopter's owner and its manufacturer partially at fault.

A Carson Helicopters representative said the company would release a statement late Tuesday afternoon. Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Tuesday.

A GE Aviation spokesman said the company will appeal the verdict, though it must first "look at the (verdict's) full language."

"We strongly disagree with the verdict," said Rick Kennedy, spokesman for GE Aviation of Cincinnati. "Our position has been all along that this verdict completely contradicts findings by the NTSB."

Anderson argued during the trial in Portland that GE knew for at least six years that there was a problem with a fuel control valve on the engine, The Oregonian reported. But rather than correct the problem, Anderson said, the company treated it like a service issue.

Anderson introduced as evidence a GE internal email from Aug. 6, 2008, the day after the crash, discussing the size of the fuel filter, noting that the military version removes much smaller particles than the commercial version.

GE attorney Kevin Smith argued that the helicopter crashed because it was more than 1,400 pounds overweight at takeoff, and that the pilots were relying on inadequate information about the weight and liftoff power provided by the owners of the helicopter, Carson Helicopters of Grants Pass.

Smith said sound spectrum analysis from cockpit recorders showed the helicopter was at full power when it hit first one tree and then another before crashing to the ground about 150 yards from the helipad where it picked up the firefighting crew to take them back to camp.

Besides pilot Schwanenberg, 54, of Lostine, the dead included Jim Ramage, 63, a U.S. Forest Service inspector pilot from Redding, Calif.; and firefighters Shawn Blazer, 30, of Medford; Scott Charlson, 25, of Phoenix, Ore.; Matthew Hammer, 23, of Grants Pass; Edrik Gomez, 19, of Ashland; Bryan Rich, 29, of Medford; David Steele, 19, of Ashland; and Steven "Caleb" Renno, 21, of Cave Junction.

The families of eight men who were killed and three who were injured reached out-of-court settlements with three of five defendants in multiple lawsuits filed after the crash.

NEWS: Plastic Heal Thyself: Scientists Invent Smart Polymers

?There are millions and millions of applications, ranging from transportation to sensing to space to energy to cosmetics to health to medicine to many things,? said Marek Urban, a polymer scientist at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, who presented some of his latest work today at a the American Chemical Society meeting in San Diego. ?Whatever you desire.?

One of the first major breakthroughs in self-healing materials came in 2001, when researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign figured out how to embed microcapsules into polymers. These long chains of repeated molecular units are linked with chemical bonds. When the material was damaged, the microcapsules would break open, releasing a liquid healing agent that would repair broken bonds.

Scientists have made a number of technical advances since then, including refinements in how quickly and efficiently chemical bonds can be disassembled and reassembled within materials.

Although the new generation of coatings is often called ?self-healing,? most of these materials don?t actually heal themselves, said Christoph Weder, a polymer scientist at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Instead, something is required to stimulate healing. Early generation versions required heat to essentially melt molecules and allow them to flow back together.

In 2009, Urban?s team developed a polyurethane polymer that healed with exposure to ultraviolet light. And last year, in a paper that appeared in the journal Nature, Weder and colleagues reported the use of focused UV light to spark the healing process in a different kind of rubbery plastic that is made of shorter molecules and linked with metal ions.

Urban?s team has now developed self-heating latex coatings that turn red when damaged, reminiscent of the blood on a human scratch. Like paint, Urban said, the material can be applied to just about any kind of surface. Tiny sensing molecules are spaced at regular intervals throughout the polymer so that when bonds break as a result of damage to the surface, a color change occurs.

Then, when exposed to specific wavelengths light or to specific temperature or pH conditions, the molecule closes back up again. Urban?s new material turns red when damaged, but future versions will likely use other colors.

?This is the first example of a material that self heals and also changes color,? he told Discovery News. ?Nobody ever did this before.?

"Mother Nature has endowed all kinds of biological systems with the ability to repair themselves," including skin, DNA and tree bark, Urban added in a press release. "Our new plastic tries to mimic nature, issuing a red signal when damaged and then renewing itself when exposed to visible light, temperature or pH changes."

Color changes could be useful signals that would alert engineers or consumers that damage has occurred to a product, Weder said. The visible scratch would then guide the application of light to focus on the area that needs it.

?This is something that has been on my drawing board for a long time,? Weder said. ?It shows you where the defect is and the system can then be healed.?

Earlier this year in Europe, Nissan released prototypes of an iPhone case with self-healing technology. But there is still a ways to go before the technology becomes widespread.

It is relatively easy, for example, to make soft materials that self-heal, Urban said, because gel-like substances flow easily. But it is much more difficult to create hard and durable self-healing materials that can withstand heat and stress, which would be far more useful in the bolts or coatings of objects like airplanes and space shuttles.

Some day, Urban said, scientists may be able to make objects out of materials that replicate and self-heal, essentially growing like trees.

Barry lost his mother to cancer in 2002 and again endured a similar reality when his brother informed him that he had colorectal cancer in 2006, passing away from the disease three years later.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cause of death from cancer across all cancer types in men and women worldwide, killing around 700,000 people each year. Another harsh reality is that approximately one million new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year. Likewise, in South Africa, it is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer. Considering the statistics, one would expect colorectal cancer to be as openly and widely talked about at breast cancer or lung cancer yet shockingly few people have heard about colorectal cancer or know much about it. Showing just how important colorectal cancer awareness is.

Barry helped host the awareness brunch at Planet Fitness Wanderers. During the brunch Barry relayed how devastating losing his mum was, but later having to endure the loss of his brother was just heart breaking. ?Who expects your younger brother to pass away before you?? asked Barry.

?The Cousin?s? input ensured the awareness brunch retained a humorous tone. That said, the fact that Barry himself has lost loved ones to cancer and relayed the ordeal meant the morning wasn?t all jokes.

The key message that came through Friday morning, both by Barry and Lauren Pretorius, Campaigning for Cancer (C4C) CEO and Be Cancer Aware Representative was the importance of early detection. In true Barry Hilton style, he made light of the unpleasantness of having a colonoscopy, but stressed the importance of being screened regularly. He himself goes for annual screening, which is a practice recommended by health practitioners if 45 years of age or older.

Pretorius, the advocacy groups CEO, was on hand to provide insight into the latest statics and information on cancer, and to provide information about colorectal cancer.

Overall the morning proved informative and touching. Through Barry?s support we were able to highlight the importance of colorectal cancer awareness to ensure early detection and thereby save lives. We hope you can help us spread this message further!

Planet Fitness helps create awareness

BCA and Planet Fitness are collaborating for the month of March. Tight thighs and tush classes are being held in flagship gyms around the country in aid of CCAM. These are currently being promoted within the Planet Fitness group to encourage members to attend classes and support the cause while staying fit and healthy.

By understanding normal digestive function and being aware of the signs of colorectal cancer, physical gut feelings can become intuitive and should not be ignored. With this in mind, the theme for this year?s CCAM is ?Ignoring a gut feeling??

Early detection and treatment

The risk of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer begins at age 40 and increases after the age of 50 ? both men and women should be screened. Risk factors revolve around poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, family history of colorectal cancer, and age.

?If diagnosed and treated early, colorectal cancer is treatable and in many cases curable,? says Cape Town-based Oncologist, Dr Garth Davids.

Dr Davids explains that colorectal cancer can occur anywhere in the colon or rectum.? ?The cancer develops when the normal process of renewal among the cells lining the bowel is interrupted. A tumour may form, which, if detected at an early stage, can be removed, and patients have a chance of a full recovery and quality of life. If the cancer has reached a more advanced stage, other treatment options such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be considered. Chemotherapy with targeted therapy may be an option for some patients,? he says.

BCA encourages people to reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer through regular screenings and examinations from the age of 40. Regular screenings are the only way to detect and prevent colorectal cancer, and early detection is vital for a favourable prognosis.

Fisker plans to replace the battery packs on 640 Karma sedans

Fisker Automotive hasn't exactly had the smoothest of launches for its all-electric Karma sedan, and it's now been dealt yet another small setback. As Wired Autopia reports, Fisker now plans to replace the battery packs on nearly all of the Karmas that have rolled off the assembly line -- apparently due to the same issue that caused the car to break down during Consumer Reports' test of the car. That includes some 640 cars in all (up from 239 in an earlier recall), although Fisker notes that it has only seen the issue on a "handful" of vehicles. If you're the owner of one of those, you can expect to receive a notice in the next few days, along with a software update (unrelated to the recall) that promises improvements on everything form the powertrain to infotainment system.

Health fair in Hampstead highlights fitness, holistic medicine ...

HAMPSTEAD ? Roclyn Porter pressed a button to inflate the two lungs on display at the Hampstead Health Fair yesterday.

?One is a healthy lung and the other is the equivalent of smoking a pack a day for 16 years,? she said. ?The black on the lungs is tar and it doesn?t inflate fully. Most people are freaked out. It?s a nice visual.?

Porter works for Family Mediation and Juvenile Services and explained the organization uses the lungs ? which are from pigs not humans ? for tobacco education. Her display was one of 36 different health-related groups at the Hampstead Middle School yesterday.

Nearly 300 people came to the fair, from children to seniors. Organizer Berny Longbook said the Hampstead Health Fair has become a community event after running for 11 years.

?Every year we see the same kids,? she said. ?They?ve grown up with the fair. It?s become a family affair.?

And each year, more local businesses want to participate. This year, the fair had new holistic health options, including Merrimack Valley Acupuncture and a reflexologist, who analyzes different parts of the body.

?There?s a lot of networking that goes on at the fair,? she said. ?That?s something the vendors tell us they like.?

One booth had a flat-screen TV and Kinect video game system, set up by Ted Curtin, owner of Hampstead Health and Fitness Center.

?We have a kids? fitness center,? he said. ?They learn to exercise and also to do interactive fitness video games. It?s a workout, let me tell you. I?m out of breath.?

The children at the event lined up to play a track and field game, running, jumping and throwing in place. Jeremy Wyckoff, 10, of Atkinson threw the longest javelin in the game.

?I think it?s really fun and good exercise,? he said. ?I play it a lot. No one?s going to beat my record.?

Julie Kinney, owner of Living Well Physical Therapy in Chester, had a machine that looked like a scale with a moveable base to measure people?s balance.

?This machine tests balance and strength issues,? she said. ?It shows if people have an increased risk of falling. Then we let them know how we could possibly help them.?

Other displays included information from an expert on Lyme Disease, free massages, free dental and hearing screenings and more. Phil Boshar, pharmacy manager for Walgreens in Hampstead, offered a free blood pressure screening for every visitor.

?This is our fifth year participating in the fair,? he said. ?We promote the blood pressure screenings, but we also do pneumonia and shingles vaccines for patients in their 60s.?

And residents said they appreciated the services offered at the fair. Bina Beauregard, 70, of Haverhill said this is the third year she?s come to the fair.

?I love it; it?s very informative,? she said. ?I did the balance test and it was great, especially for older people.?

Lisa Fiarhust, 46 of Plaistow came with her two sons, age 6 and 7.

?There?s so much information,? she said. ?The Lyme disease exhibit is fascinating. And the kids love it because of the free giveaways.?

Longbook said they?re already planning for next year, adding more vendors to the list.

?It?s definitely been a successful day,? she said. ?We always come up with ideas for next year today. Next year, we?re going to invite the Easter Seals we decided.?
