Bristol-Myers pushes blockbuster cancer drug prospect into ASCO ...

When Bristol-Myers Squibb ($BMY) agreed to buy up Medarex for $2.4 billion three years ago, everyone was focused on the fate of ipilimumab, the melanoma antibody treatment that would ultimately go on to a celebrated approval as Yervoy. But BMS also laid claim to another antibody--BMS-936558, partnered with Ono Pharmaceuticals--in the buyout. And the big biotech company now has high hopes of making this the latest pearl to add to its string of ASCO jewels.

While Yervoy revved up the bodies' T cells to attack cancer, BMS-936558 zeroes in on a cellular switch identified as PD-1, a facilitator for cancer cells attempting to evade destruction by the immune system. In an in-depth feature from Bloomberg's Robert Langreth, the company lays out plans to add to its portfolio of data as it moves the treatment to center stage at the upcoming ASCO meeting in Chicago. And it's earning some rave reviews among analysts tracking the drug.

"It is the early stage of a whole new field of cancer therapy," Seamus Fernandez, an analyst at Leerink Swann, tells Bloomberg. Fernandez estimates that the drug, a likely combo therapy that could go on to treat a number of cancers, could earn as much as $4 billion a year for BMS, which recently expanded its marketing rights to the treatment.

The preliminary data has been intriguing. Initial data indicates that the antibody shrunk tumors in a significant minority of melanoma patients, as well as groups of lung and kidney cancer victims. And BMS is aggressively planning a slate of late-stage studies to leapfrog its way to a potential blockbuster approval.

"After many years of negative studies, the idea of reactivating the immune system against cancer seems to be paying off," Yale's Roy Herbst tells Langreth.

BMS isn't alone in the field. It will race against Merck, GlaxoSmithKline and Teva, which have their own PD-1 programs in the clinic.

Graphic D-Signs, Inc. - Small Business Advertising Agency? - NJ ...

By Danielle Avenoso / Senior Brand Strategist & Account Manager,?NJ Marketing Agency?Graphic D-Signs, Inc.

What Makes a Web Site Successful??

In today?s marketplace, it?s not just enough to have a web site, small business owners need to have a web site that makes a statement. It should be creatively and aesthetically appealing, as well as strategic and functional. Be sure to follow these guidelines when designing and developing your web site and it will be a greater success.
  1. Does your web site integrate and reinforce your branding? First impressions are everything. If your web site doesn?t infuse your brand identity strategically or creatively, it will look like a generic site.
  2. Is your web site user friendly and easy to navigate? You have 4-6 seconds to leave a good impression with a visitor before he leaves your site. If you are successful, he will stay on your site for a longer time which can translate to a new lead.?
  3. Does your web site have the right content? If your copy isn?t informative or doesn?t resonate with your target audience, they will leave as quickly as they came.?
  4. Does your web site encourage visitors to follow your company? Newsletters, Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn, Google+ and other social media platforms are great tools to build your credibility and clientele. Your web site should make it easy for visitors to follow you and stay up-to-date with your company to help build loyalty.?
  5. Does your web site initiate action? Your web site should help to cultivate a next step, whether it be making a purchase on the site or filling out a contact form to receive more information, a quote or schedule a service. A direct call-to-action is critical.?
  6. Is your web site search engine optimized? What good is a web site that can?t be found? The answer: It?s no good, actually. Your web site should include Google Analytics, META, keyword relevancy, page titling and backend HTML optimization, to name a few.?
  7. Is your web site built with the latest web techniques and standards? HTML5 and WordPress are some of the most recent and popular approaches to web development. Your web site is a direct correlation of your business in the eyes of the consumer so you don?t want to fall short with first impressions; and an outdated and obsolete web site will surely do that.?
  8. Is your web site compatible with all devices? It?s so important that your web site can be viewed on all devices, whether it be a mobile phone, laptop, desktop or tablet. Otherwise, it could be a missed opportunity to connect with a potential client.?
  9. Is your web site compliant with all browsers? It?s so important that your web site can be viewed on all browsers, whether it be (Mac & PC) on IE7+, Firefox 3+, Operat9 and Safari 4+. Otherwise, it could be a missed opportunity to connect with a potential client.?
  10. Do you own all the rights to the web site? It will greatly benefit you if you secure the rights to the web site as well as all files upon the completion of the development. Therefore, you will be able to update, manage and own your site.

More often than not, I see so many small business owners not heed to these guidelines. As a result, their web site isn?t as successful as desired and doesn?t positively impact their ROI or profits. Do yourself a favor and make sure you integrate these best practices into your web site.?

Liberia's Taylor jailed for 50 years over 'brutal crimes'

    By msnbc.com news services

THE HAGUE -- Judges at the international war crimes court sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison on Wednesday, saying he was responsible for "some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history."

He had been convicted of supporting rebels in Sierra Leone who murdered and mutilated thousands during their country's brutal civil war in return for blood diamonds.

Ex-Liberia President Charles Taylor guilty in 'watershed' war-crimes case

The Special Court for Sierra Leone found Taylor guilty last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a bloody rampage during the decade-long war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead.

Presiding Judge Richard Lussick says the crimes Taylor was convicted of were of the "utmost gravity in terms of scale and brutality."

Blood diamonds? Supermodel thought they were 'dirty stones'

"The lives of many more innocent civilians in Sierra Leone were lost or destroyed as a direct result of his actions," Lussick said.

Taylor showed no emotion as Lussick handed down what will effectively be a life sentence.?

The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president is the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II.

'In a class of his own'
Prosecutors had asked judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone to impose an 80-year sentence; Taylor's lawyers urged judges to hand down a sentence that offered him some hope of release before he dies.

Lussick said an 80-year sentence would have been excessive as Taylor was convicted of aiding and abetting crimes and not direct involvement.?

But the judge added that Taylor was "in a class of his own" compared to others convicted by the United Nations-backed court.?

"The special status of Mr. Taylor as a head of state puts him in a different category of offenders for the purpose of sentencing," Lussick said.??

The International Criminal Court at the Hague has found former Liberian President Charles Taylor guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity by supporting brutal rebels responsible for countless atrocities in the 1991-2002 Sierra Leone civil war. ITV's Paul Brand reports.

At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Taylor expressed "deepest sympathy" for the suffering of victims of atrocities in Sierra Leone, but insisted he had acted to help stabilize the West Africa region and claimed he never knowingly assisted in the commission of crimes.

"What I did...was done with honor," he said. "I was convinced that unless there was peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia would not be able to move forward."

However, judges ruled that Taylor armed and supplied the rebels in full knowledge they would likely use weapons to commit terrible crimes, in exchange for payments of "blood diamonds" often obtained by slave labor.

Prosecutors said there was no reason for leniency, given the extreme nature of the crimes, Taylor's "greed" and misuse of his position of power.

"The purposely cruel and savage crimes committed included public executions and amputations of civilians, the display of decapitated heads at checkpoints, the killing and public disembowelment of a civilian whose intestines were then stretched across the road to make a check point, public rapes of women and girls, and people burned alive in their homes," prosecutor Brenda Hollis wrote in a brief appealing for the 80-year sentence.

Taylor stepped down and fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted by the court in 2003. He was finally arrested and sent to the Netherlands in 2006.

While the Sierra Leone court is based in that country's capital, Freetown, Taylor's trial is being staged in Leidschendam, a suburb of The Hague, for fear holding it in West Africa could destabilize the region.?

    Tropical storm Bud lashes Mexico

Tropical Storm Bud lashed the west coast of Mexico late on Friday, but this year?s first serious eastern Pacific storm was rapidly losing strength, giving Mexican emergency officials some respite.

However, a new storm named Beryl has formed in the Atlantic, threatening to disrupt the plans of thousands of US beachgoers taking advantage of the long Memorial Day weekend.

Mexican authorities breathed a sigh of relief as Bud displayed weaker wind gusts and lower swells than expected.

Overnight, the storm moved about 155km west-northwest of the port city of Manzanillo, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC). It was creeping northward at 11kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 95kph.

?Additional rapid weakening is forecast,? the NHC said. ?And Bud [was] expected to weaken to a tropical depression[yesterday].?

The weakening notwithstanding, emergency officials had alerted residents and prepared shelters as Bud ? which briefly intensified to a Category 3 storm on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale ? made its approach.

?We are on alert, we are preparing some 120 shelters in the coastal towns,? Colima civil protection chief Melchor Urusua said.

The Mexican government discontinued a hurricane warning along the central Pacific coastline from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, downgrading it to a tropical storm warning.

A tropical storm watch was in effect for the coast from north of Cabo Corrientes to San Blas.

The eye of the storm was expected to move near land overnight from Friday to yesterday before taking a gradual turn toward the southwest away from the coast today, according to the NHC.

Tropical storm conditions were already affecting part of the coastline.

Bud is expected to drop up to 25cm of rain in the Mexican coastal states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco and southern Nayarit, with up to 38cm in isolated areas.

This rainfall could produce ?life-threatening? flash floods and mudslides, the NHC said.

Mexican authorities have formed a task force in Jalisco, which includes 31 all-terrain vehicles and two helicopters to deal with emergency situations as well as deliver water and emergency food supplies to towns and villages that might be cut off by flooding

?A storm surge is expected to produce coastal flooding,? the NHC warned. ?The surge will be accompanied by large and damaging waves.? The center also said that swells generated by Bud could also produce dangerous, even ?life-threatening? surf and rip current conditions.

However, as Mexico appeared to have dodged the bullet, a new subtropical storm named Beryl formed in the Atlantic off the coast of South Carolina. Beryl, which was located 490km east of Charleston, South Carolina, was moving north at 15kph, the Miami-based center said.

Canadian Oil & Gas Equities May Have Finally Bottomed Out

Canada is the largest foreign provider of oil and gas to the United States, and the two countries are generally friendly, making many Americans not even consider Canada a foreign energy source, or deem it an acceptable one. Still, many Canadian citizens, oil and gas equities, and the country itself, must not be feeling too pleased by the recent U.S. government's denial of the Keystone pipeline, which would have facilitated the distribution of dramatically increased levels of Canadian petroleum into the Unites States.

Additionally, natural gas prices within North America have fallen dramatically over the last two years, reaching historical lows within 2012. The apparent bottoming process for natural gas process may be over, as gas prices have increased by about 30 percent over the last month, but such is no certainty. Moreover, the capacity and trade problems highlighted by the Keystone roadblock have compelled many investors to exit positions in Canadian petroleum equities, and especially those with high exposure to natural gas.

Further, the Canadian dollar is primarily backed by the nation's natural resources, and has come under weakness versus the U.S. dollar over the last several quarters, after most commodities peaked and started to decline, including oil and gold. Recent European instability has further bolstered the U.S. dollar versus most commodities and the currencies that rely upon them.

Below is a recent performance table for six high yield Canadian oil & gas equities that trade within the United States (listed in alphabetical order): Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE), Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE), Enbridge Inc. (ENB), Enerplus Corporation (ERF), Pengrowth Energy Corporation (PGH) and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (PWE). I have included their one-week, one-month and 2012-to-date equity performance rates, as well as their current yields.

For years now, natural gas prices have trended lower, as new technology has increased natural gas supplies far faster than demand for it has grown. Most Canadian oil and gas equities followed oil and gas price fluctuations, and haven't changed their dividend policies in several quarters. The recent low gas prices have caused some investors to question the sustainability of several of these lofty dividends, especially if oil follows gas lower.

In the last month, the above-listed equities averaged a decline of 13.61 percent, and the group now averages a decline of 20.7 percent since the start of the 2012. The declines were accelerating in early May, but the group appears to have stabilized over the last week or two.

Last week, the group actually averaged a 0.92 percent appreciation, with half of the equities appreciating and the other half all declining by less than 1 percent. This could indicate we are at a bottom for these equities, provided the commodities that they produce, oil and gas, can maintain their present price ranges.

Many may argue that dividend cuts have been priced into several of these equities, though others would assert that they should fall further upon such an announcement. Several have maintained their current dividend policy for the last two years, with half of the above-listed companies reporting and paying their dividend on a monthly basis. The higher dividend payers have certainly been the worst performers out of the group within 2012. Below is a three-month share performance comparison chart for the six above-mentioned Canadian petroleum producers:

Over time, it is expected that a growing amount of both oil and gas might find its way to western Canada for export to China, but such transfers take time, and pipeline build-outs are expensive and slow. It is possible that Canada could supply both China and the U.S., but issues of scale and capacity will have to be resolved.

Though outside the control of these companies, an additional Canadian pipeline to the U.S. could easily become a key issue of political debate during the second half of this election year. It is possible that the previously denied Keystone pipeline or another potion of it will get approved within the next two quarters, to prevent its absence from becoming a sore point for political targeting, and any such approval would broadly bode well for Canadian energy companies

Naked Man Eating Victim's Face Shot And Killed By Miami Police: Report

One man is dead and another hospitalized after a bizarre incident off the MacArthur Causeway reportedly forced a police officer to open fire.

City of Miami police say the incident began Saturday afternoon about 2 p.m. when officers responded to reports of 2 men fighting in the bike path of the Biscayne Boulevard exit ramp, alongside the Miami Herald's parking garage -- where, according to the Herald, an officer observed a naked man eating another man's face:

The officer, who has not been identified, approached and saw that the naked man was actually chewing the other man's head, according to witnesses. The officer ordered the naked man to back away, and when he continued the assault, the officer shot him. The attacker continued to eat the man, despite being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots.

"[Officers] attempted to separate them, there was some sort of confrontation," Miami Police spokesman Willie Moreno told Local10.

Photographs taken from the Herald's garage show the naked man lying dead at the scene. Police said the second male was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Fast-growing American Owned and Managed Outsourcing ...

Staff Virtual, a leading provider of outsourcing to the Philippines, is pleased to announce that today, it has moved its head to Unit 1101, 11th Floor, Pearl Bank Centre Building, Salcedo Village, Makati City, Philippines. The new 229 square meter facility will feature state-of-the-art, redundant phone and Internet that will enable our employees to serve our clients better, and more reliably. For the past two years Staff Virtual has been headquartered in PB Com Tower. Today the company moves to the heart of the city, strategically located closer to the nexus of the city?s main public transport hubs.

Staff Virtual?s office is located in Makati City, the New York City of the Philippines. In this fast-paced hub of companies old and new, Staff Virtual?s space stands out as a relaxed, healthy and comfortable atmosphere that brings out the best in our employees. Many outsourcing providers have to contend with high attrition rates due in no small part to environmental factors: frequent sick leaves caused by poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle and viruses spread through the air conditioning system; high stress levels due to frequent shift changes and late night hours. Business process outsourcing (BPO) companies have to spend increasing amounts on incentives and rewards programs to retain employees, driving up costs. Staff Virtual recognizes and gets to the root of these issues from the start.

Here are a few things you might see at the the Staff Virtual office:
    Redundant high-speed Internet
    Redundant phone systems
    Surveillance and security systems
    Company-wide recycling program
    Inspirational artwork
    Green cleaning products
    Fresh flowers
    CEO Suggestion box

In the future, the office will feature other amenities including; Lava lamps, bean bags, and large inflatable balls, shared DVD library, books, and magazines, a flat screen TV and surround sound system, assorted video games for relaxation and fun, and a Karaoke machine.

The office will also feature an honor bar, where employees can get healthy snacks and drinks around the clock. Employees take what they need and pay using the honor system. Along with redundancies within the office, the building itself will feature 24/7 generator backup in the event of power outages or blackouts in Manila, which occasionally occur during severe storms.

?It makes a lot of sense to move into this bigger office. The company has grown by 40% in the last three months, and we need more space,? says Ike Stranathan, the Founder and President of Staff Virtual.

Just a couple of weeks after the move, Staff Virtual also started a new season of its employee wellness programme. ?The need for healthy employees who understand nutrition and fitness has never been greater, we want our employees feeling their best so that they can best serve our clients partners,? says Roger Cox, the CEO of Staff Virtual. Cox continued by saying ?The opening of our new large office in Makati reaffirms our commitment to delivering strong support and the best of industry practices to our clients here in North America. Our office will help us meet the increasing demand from organizations looking to make the most of the Philippines flexible, cost effective and highly skilled labor pool.?
