Writer/director Asghar Farhadi dedicates the award to the people of Iran.

Asghar Farhadi accepts Best Foreign Language Film at the 2012 Oscars

"A Separation," Iran's entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category, won the Oscar on Sunday night (February 26) — the first film from that country to do so. The Academy Award is just the latest for "A Separation," which has already collected a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award and many other statuettes during this awards season.
"At this time, many Iranians all over the world are watching us. And I imagine them to be very happy," writer/director Asghar Farhadi said as he accepted the award at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The film is also an Oscar nominee for Best Original Screenplay.
For those who have yet to see it, "Separation" is part family drama, part legal battle. After arguing about whether to leave Iran to give their daughter a better life, estranged couple Nader and Simin (Peyman Maadi and Leila Hatami) decide to separate. Nader hires a woman named Razieh (Sareh Bayat) to look after his father, who has Alzheimer's, but Razieh leaves the father unattended and is subsequently fired. The altercation that follows is possibly the cause of caretaker Razieh's miscarriage and Nader is charged with murder.
Along with portraying the dilemmas that a family must face in today's turbulent Middle East political climate, "A Separation" gives a glimpse into the Iranian justice system, which is a blend of civil and religious law.
During his acceptance speech, Farhadi offered his Oscar for "A Separation" to the people of Iran, "a people who respect all countries and civilizations, and despise hostility and resentment."
