Death toll rises to 78 in Spanish train crash

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? A Spanish train that hurtled off the rails and smashed into a security wall as it rounded a bend was going so fast that carriages tumbled off the tracks like dominos, according to eyewitness accounts and video footage obtained Thursday.

The official death toll from Wednesday night's crash near this Christian festival city in northwest Spain rose to 78 in Spain's deadliest wreck in four decades.

Hospital officials said 141 people were injured, and 36 remained in critical condition Thursday, among them four children.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, toured the crash scene alongside rescue workers and went to a nearby hospital to visit some of the wounded and their families.

"For a native of Santiago, like me, this is the saddest day," Rajoy said. He said judicial authorities and the Public Works Ministry had launched parallel investigations into what caused the crash.

Eyewitness accounts backed by security-camera footage of the moment of disaster suggested that the eight-carriage train carrying 218 passengers was going too fast as it tried to turn left underneath a road bridge. The speed limit on that section of track is 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour, Spanish officials said.

The footage, which the Spanish railway authority Adif said probably came from one of its cameras, shows the train carriages start to buckle soon into the turn, with the first and second passenger carriages leaving the tracks first. The engine itself quickly follows, violently tipping on to its right side as it crashes into a concrete security wall and bulldozes its way along the ground.

In the background, all the rear carriages can be seen starting to decouple and come off the tracks. The picture goes blank as the engine appears to crash directly into the camera.

"I saw the train coming out of the bend at great speed and then there was a big noise," one eyewitness, Consuelo Domingues, told The Associated Press. "... Then everybody tried to get out of the train."

Santiago officials, who had been preparing for the city's annual Catholic festival Thursday, canceled it and took control of the main sports stadium to use as a makeshift morgue. There, relatives of many of the dead could be seen sobbing and embracing each other.

Maria Pardo Rios, spokeswoman for the Galicia region's main court, said 73 people died at the scene, four others after they were taken to hospitals. The Interior Ministry later confirmed a 78th death.

A regional Galicia health official, Rocio Mosquera, told reporters Thursday afternoon that 95 people remained hospitalized, among them 36 in critical condition, including four children.

The Interior Ministry, responsible for law and order, ruled out terrorism as a cause.

It was Spain's deadliest train accident since 1972, when a train collided with a bus in southwest Spain, killing 86 people and injuring 112.

"July 24 will no longer be the eve of a day of celebration but rather one commemorating one of the saddest days in the history of Galicia," said Alberto Nunez Feijoo, regional president of Galicia. Santiago de Compostela is its capital.

The accident created a scene that was "Dante-esque," Feijoo said. He declared seven days of mourning for the victims.

Rescue workers spent the night searching through smashed carriages alongside the tracks.

As dawn broke, cranes brought to the scene were used to lift the carriages off the tracks. Rescue workers collected passengers' scattered luggage and loaded it into a truck next to the tracks.

Rescuers described a scene of horror immediately after the crash. Smoke billowed from at least one carriage that had caught fire, while another had been torn into two parts.

Residents of the residential neighborhood closest to the rail line struggled to help victims out of the toppled cars. Some passengers were pulled out of broken windows. Television images showed one man atop a carriage lying on its side, using a pickaxe to try to smash through a window. Other rescuers used rocks to try to free survivors from the fiery wreckage.

Nearby, rescue workers lined up bodies covered in blankets alongside the tracks.

State-owned train operator Renfe said it couldn't confirm how many staff were on board the train. It said the crash happened at 8.41 p.m. (1841 GMT) about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of Santiago de Compostela.

Spanish media said the train had two drivers aboard and both survived.

Renfe said it and Adif, another state-owned company that manages tracks, signals and other railway infrastructure, were cooperating with a judge appointed to investigate the accident.

It was the world's third major rail accident this month.

On July 12, six people were killed and nearly 200 were injured when four cars of a passenger train derailed south of Paris.

On July 6, 72 cars carrying crude oil derailed in Lac-Megantic, Ontario, setting off explosions and fires that killed 47 people.

Catholic pilgrims converge on Santiago de Compostela annually to celebrate a festival honoring St. James, a disciple of Jesus whose remains are said to rest in a shrine. The city is the main gathering point for those who reach the end of the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route that has drawn Christians since the Middle Ages.

Several injured passengers said they felt a strong vibration just before the cars jumped the tracks, according to Xabier Martinez, a photographer who talked with them after arriving at the scene as rescue workers were still removing bodies.

One passenger, Ricardo Montero, told the Cadena Ser radio station that "when the train reached that bend it began to flip over, many times, with some carriages ending up on top of others, leaving many people trapped below. We had to get under the carriages to get out."

Another passenger, Sergio Prego, told Cadena Ser the train "traveled very fast" just before it derailed and the cars flipped upside down, on their sides and into the air.

"I've been very lucky because I'm one of the few able to walk out," Prego said.

The Alvia 730 series train started from Madrid and was scheduled to end its journey at El Ferrol, about 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Santiago de Compostela. Alvias operate high-speed services but do not go as fast as Spain's fastest bullet trains, called AVEs.

The maximum Alvia speed is 250 kph (155 mph) on tracks made especially for the AVEs, and they travel at a maximum speed of 220 kph (137 mph) on normal gauge rails.

Other major train crashes in Spain include a 1944 accident involving three trains that crashed in a tunnel. That disaster produced wildly disputed death tolls ranging from the government's official count of 78 to more than 500, according to later research.

In 2006, 43 people died when a subway train crashed because of excessive speed in the southern city of Valencia. In 2004, 191 died when al-Qaida-inspired terrorists detonated 10 bombs on four Madrid commuter trains.

    Russian opposition leader Navalny released

KIROV, Russia (AP) ? A Russian court on Friday released opposition leader Alexei Navalny from custody less than 24 hours after he was convicted of embezzlement and sentenced to five years in prison.

The release came after a surprise request by prosecutors, who said that because Navalny is a candidate in this fall's Moscow mayoral race keeping him in custody would deny him his right to seek election.

Judge Ignatiy Embasinov supported that appeal, saying that Navalny's incarceration would "prevent him from exercising his rights of being elected."

    Navalny's supporters cheered Embasinov's order.

The release, under the condition that he not travel outside Moscow, will extend until appeals of his conviction are completed.

After the Friday decision, a smiling Navalny ? a popular blogger who has exposed high-level corruption and mocked the Kremlin ? emerged from the caged-off defendants' section of the courtroom, hugged his wife, and thanked the supporters who had protested his conviction on Manezhnaya Square next to the Kremlin the day before.

Navalny, dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans, said his release was a result of Thursday's protests. He claimed his conviction and sentence "had been vetted by the presidential administration ... but when people came out on Manezhnaya they rushed to go back on that decision."

Navalny's lawyer Olga Mikhailova described Friday's ruling as unprecedented in Russia. His conviction on Thursday was criticized by the United States and the European Union.

Outside the court, Navalny was greeted by supporters, one of them offering him blini ? Russian pancakes ? a sarcastic play on the name of the judge who sentenced him, Sergei Blinov.

Navalny said it's "impossible to predict" whether Friday's decision could raise the chances of his acquittal on appeal. He also expressed resentment over being manipulated, saying he has not yet decided whether to continue his mayoral campaign.

"I'm not some kitten or a puppy that can be thrown out of election, say, 'you're not running' and later say 'yes, let's get him back in.' I will get back to Moscow and we will talk it over with my election headquarters," he said.

Presentation of the appeal and the decision by the court for the Kirov region took little more than an hour, a sharp contrast to the droning 3 ?-hour verdict reading and sentencing in a lower court the previous day.

Navalny said he learnt about the protests in Moscow only on Friday morning from his lawyers. He said he was awakened and summoned to go to court: "I thought maybe it's a new court case."

Navalny rose to prominence among the opposition during a series of massive protests in Moscow against President Vladimir Putin's re-election to a third presidential term in March 2012.

Navalny began his rise to prominence by blogging about his investigations into corruption at state-owned companies where he owned shares, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. He and his team of lawyers and activists have plumbed property registers abroad to identify top officials and lawmakers who own undeclared foreign assets and hold foreign citizenship.

Navalny's blog quickly became an Internet sensation not only because of his exposures but because of its engaging illustrations, funny images and witty catchphrases. It was Navalny who first called the dominant United Russia party "the party of crooks and thieves," a phrase that still dogs Kremlin loyalists.

The opposition leader's investigations targeted a wide circle of Putin loyalists ? from members of Parliament to state bankers ? threatening to discredit the system of governance he has built.

Daniel Cormier and Roy Nelson show signed ?fight contract? for UFC 166 bout

Daniel Cormier beat Frank Mir in April. Since then, he's been pushing for a new fight, and wants Roy Nelson. The two had a war of words after Nelson called Cormier an "Uncle Tom," and they both have been pushing for a fight.

The only problem? Nelson's loss to Stipe Miocic was the last bout on his UFC contract. He has reportedly been negotiating for a new contract, but hasn't yet signed on the dotted line.

Cormier wants to fight Nelson at UFC 166, where his teammate Cain Velasquez will fight Junior dos Santos in a title bout. Instead of continuing to wait to for word from Nelson or the UFC, Cormier pulled out a sheet of loose leaf paper and drew up his own contract. He tweeted it to Nelson, who returned it "signed."

If only it were that simple. Hopefully, the UFC and Nelson can come to an agreement on the contract because it could be a fun bout. Nelson had a terrible showing in a decision loss to Miocic. Before that, he had three straight knockout wins. Cormier, a two-time Olympic wrestler, is 12-0. He won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, and then won his UFC debut with a decision over Mir.

Is this a fight you want to see? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.

Obama wins nominee battle with Senate GOP

The Senate confirmed President Obama?s nominees to head the Labor Department and the Environmental Protection Agency Thursday, clearing the decks of the controversial nominees that had threatened to push the Senate into a parliamentary meltdown just two days ago.

Thomas Perez was confirmed to be Labor Department secretary on a 54-46 party-line vote after having barely survived a GOP filibuster a day earlier. Meanwhile, Gina McCarthy was confirmed to be EPA administrator on a 59-40 vote.

If all Republicans who voted against Mr. Perez had decided to filibuster, they could have blocked his nomination. But thanks to a deal reached on Tuesday, some Republican senators agreed to let the nominees go through in exchange for Democrats agreeing not to use a parliamentary short cut to rewrite the rules and end the chance the minority to filibuster executive branch nominees in the future.

?As we all saw this week, the Senate came together. We talked to each other, we made bipartisan progress, and we were able to reduce the gridlock and approve President Obama?s nominees, and that was a very, very positive step forward for all of us,? said Sen. Patty Murray, Washington Democrat.

Republicans had blocked Ms. McCarthy for months as they sought to force the EPA to agree to more transparency. The agency has been accused of failing to keep electronic records such as emails, and several former officials used private email accounts to conduct agency business.

But while some lawmakers has personal reservations about Ms. McCarthy, a longtime top EPA official, most who voted against her said they were really sending a signal to Mr. Obama to rein in the agency.

?My fight is with President Obama and the EPA, the regulatory agency that has consistently placed unreasonable regulations and unobtainable standards on energy production, rather than focus on efforts to develop a domestic all-of-the-above energy strategy for the future,? said Sen. Joe Manchin III, a Democrat from West Virginia, a coal-producing state where the EPA is often viewed as a hindrance to economic development.

For Republicans, though, Mr. Perez was even more controversial. They accused him of lying, of obstructing a congressional investigation and of putting his ideology ahead of the law in his tenure leading the Justice Department?s civil rights division.

?Based on the evidence, Tom Perez is more than just some left-wing ideologue ? he?s a left-wing ideologue who appears perfectly willing to bend the rules to achieve his ends,? said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Hispanic groups had made the confirmation of Mr. Perez, the son of Dominican immigrants, a top priority, saying he would be a good addition to Mr. Obama?s Cabinet. Now they have turned their attention to the next major opening for the top job at the Homeland Security Department, where Secretary Janet Napolitano is on the way out.

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials said Mr. Obama should ?act swiftly to ensure his Cabinet is fully representative of the diversity of this great nation by nominating a high-level Latino candidate.?

The Senate has now confirmed four of the seven nominees who Democrats had said must be approved in order to prevent them from using the so-called ?nuclear option,? a parliamentary tactic to change the Senate?s operating rules in mid-session and limit filibusters.

As part of that deal, Mr. Obama has withdrawn two other nominees he made to the National Labor Relations Board, and replaced them with two new NLRB appointments.

The two withdrawn names were controversial because Mr. Obama had used his recess powers to appoint them earlier last year, but federal appeals courts have called those nominees into question, saying the president violated the Constitution in making the appointments.

'Fast Money' Recap: Searching for Answers on Google

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The S&P 500 made fresh all-time highs as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke reassured investors that the Fed would continue to support the economy.

Thursday's action saw both eBay (EBAY) and Intel (INTC) trading lower from poor earnings results. It didn't get any easier for the tech sector as both Google and Microsoft (MSFT) missed top- and bottom-line estimates.

Google missed top-line estimates for the seventh quarter in the row, as higher tax rates and expenses plagued its earnings per share. On CNBC's "Fast Money" TV show, Karen Finerman said because of those factors, the miss looks worse than it actually is.

However, she did note that the lower cost-per-clicks reported was pretty troubling. She said she was long the stock and would probably look to add more, although likely not Friday.

Guy Adami said that when Google was making its push higher, $850 was seen as a level of resistance; that has since turned to support. Although he doesn't expect the stock to get that low, it is a good reference point for traders to get out of a long position if it fails to hold. Brian Kelly noted that we're starting to see a lot of companies missing top-line estimates, which means companies are failing to grow. This is troubling because the market has already started to price in revenue and earnings growth of 4%-6% and that's simply not happening. Dan Nathan added that Google tends to be volatile around earnings, citing that the company doesn't provide a whole lot of guidance for investors and traders. The show's host, Melissa Lee, added that Google has moved up 20% since its last earnings report back in April. On Microsoft, the crew talked to Dan Niles, co-CIO of Alpha One Capital Partners, who noted that it's the fourth top-line miss in the past five earnings reports for the company, with slumping PC sales continuing to plague results. He also said the company missed revenue estimates for all five of its major business segments. "Shame on you" if investors didn't take any money off the table with the stock up over 30% year to date, Nathan said. He added the Surface tablet has been an absolute disaster and the cloud is "so necessary" for Microsoft to get right.

Comic's video of man in baby carrier goes viral

    Pop culture

Web comedian Mark Malkoff is really good at convincing stars to do stuff for him -- like getting celebrities to let him sleep over at their houses. He's not doing so well in trying to convince Bill Murray to come over for dinner ? an ongoing effort ? but as his newest MyDamnChannel viral video proves, he hasn't lost his touch entirely.

In a new "experiment" that has garnered 250,000 YouTube views in two days, Malkoff gets former "30 Rock" actor Grizz Chapman to carry him around in a baby carrier. Seriously.

"Living in New York City, wherever I go I see parents with babies in Baby Bjorns strapped to their chests," he told TODAY.com. "I was a bit envious how easy babies had it. Also, it got me thinking it might be a fun way to see the city."

In the video, the 7' Grizz totes the 5' 7" Malkoff (who as the video explains, weighs 130 pounds) around the Big Apple, into the subway, and past gawking Gothamites. Meanwhile, Mark has a snack, takes a nap and later holds hands with his wife on a date. "I'm finally taller than my wife," crows Malkoff.

When Grizz asks for a break, Malkoff snaps, "Grizz, stop being such a baby!"

"People have responded to it because it's pure fun," said Malkoff. "I think they probably also appreciate how hard it was for me to pull off. ... (T)he challenge was in successfully strapping me to Grizz, which took a while to figure out."

Meanwhile, Malkoff is already hard at work on his next experiment, which involves calling over 100 countries on Skype. And then there's the Bill Murray pursuit ? which may keep him busy for years.

"One of Bill Murray's acquaintances told me Bill doesn't even call back his own friends," he said. "I've still been periodically leaving messages on his 800 number. One of Murray's other acquaintances agreed to direct the dinner. If only Bill knew my wife, Christine, makes an excellent penne a la vodka he'd be at my apartment in Queens in a heartbeat."

Florida Orange Juice Boycott? It's A Possibilty

    CBS News Web Copy

Four days after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, civil rights activists decried Florida's controversial self-defense law, with one calling for a possible boycott of the state's orange juice.

Speaking at the NAACP's national convention in Orlando, Martin Luther King III said one possible way to protest the state's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law is to stop consuming Florida orange juice.

"The true way generally when people don't understand your plight is when you decide to exercise your buying power elsewhere," King said.

King is not the first to suggest a boycott of citrus from the Sunshine State since the verdict. According to philly.com, several hundred protesters at Philadelphia's Love Park on Sunday called for a boycott of Florida oranges and orange juice.

A message left with the Florida Department for Citrus was not immediately returned.

Since Zimmerman was acquitted, the state of Florida has been the target of boycotts and online petitions. Music legend Stevie Wonder said Sunday that he wouldn't perform in the state so long as the "Stand Your Ground" law is still in existence. A petition on MoveOn.org and various Facebook pages are urging people to boycott Florida tourism and its economy at large.

Florida oranges have been the target of boycotts several times over the years. In 1977, anti-gay comments by celebrity spokesperson Anita Bryant sparked a national boycott. In 2011, Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger called for an orange boycott after Florida said it would move the primary election date by two months.

Meanwhile, Al Sharpton said he plans to visit the capitol of Florida to begin lobbying against the law, which he called the "worst violation of civil rights in the country." He hopes to make Florida a test case for similar laws.

The comments came a day after Attorney General Eric Holder reiterated to the NAACP that the Justice Department has an open investigation into what he called the "unnecessary shooting" of Martin.

House Speaker rejects Olympic boycott over Snowden

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday soundly rejected suggestions that the United States boycott the Winter Olympics in Sochi if Russia grants asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

"Why would we want to punish U.S. athletes who've been training for three years to compete in the Olympics over a traitor who can't find a place to call home?" Boehner told reporters at a news conference.

The Ohio Republican was asked about Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham's idea that if Russia provides a safe haven for Snowden, the United States should consider keeping its athletes home during the 2014 Winter Olympics next February.

Boehner said Graham was "dead wrong."

Snowden, who disclosed details about U.S. intelligence surveillance of Internet activity, has applied for temporary asylum in Russia three weeks after arriving at a Moscow airport from Hong Kong. The United States wants Snowden sent home to face prosecution for espionage.

In the 1980s, the United States boycotted the Olympics over Russia's invasion of Afghanistan. The U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement Wednesday that it strongly opposes the idea that a boycott is in the country's best interest.

"If there are any lessons to be learned from the American boycott of 1980, it is that Olympic boycotts do not work," said committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky. "Our boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games did not contribute to a successful resolution of the underlying conflict. It did, however, deprive hundreds of American athletes, all whom had completely dedicated themselves to representing our nation at the Olympic Games, of the opportunity of a lifetime."

Snowden's fate has roiled already tense U.S.-Russian relations.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said he wouldn't speculate on any boycott of the Olympics, but added that the U.S. agrees with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Snowden's case needn't and shouldn't harm U.S.-Russian relations.

"It's a broad and important relationship," Carney said. "We want to continue to see that relationship strengthened."

Reports on UN critiques of South Korea's mandatory military service could be harbinger of policy change, and that in turn could be a boon to fertility in South Korea

Yonhap is reporting that the United Nations Human Rights Commission doesn't like South Korea's compulsory military service (HT to GI Korea at ROK Drop):
More than nine out of 10 people being imprisoned worldwide for refusing to serve in the military on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion are South Koreans, a report showed Monday.

According to the report released by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) earlier last month, of the 723 conscientious objectors worldwide, 92.5 percent or 669 are South Korean nationals.

In South Korea, all able-bodied men are required to serve about two years in compulsory military, and conscientious objectors who refuse to serve without justification face up to three years in prison if convicted.

Noticeably, 17,208 South Korean male members of the Jehovah's Witnesses have been criminally punished since 1950 for refusing to perform in the military service for their religious beliefs, the report said.

The report said that many countries have either abolished or postponed mandatory military conscription, citing examples such as Germany and Croatia.

I'm not sure how I feel about the UN chiming in on this. South Korea remains in a declared state of war, and it is South Korea's continued readiness (or perception thereof) plus the guarantee of US intervention, that keeps North Korea (and its patron China) at bay.

But when the South Korean media starts putting out these stories, especially with comparisons with other countries, it likely signals the beginning of a dialogue on policy (if media stories and public opinion polls can be called such, in any country) that could eventually mean the end of mandatory service in favor of a voluntary professional military.

Frankly, I do like the UN's suggestion of providing an alternative civil service to military conscription for true conscientious objectors (like Jehovah's Witnesses), but I fear that such a change would be rife with abuse. And that in and of itself would be troublesome, not just because those with fewer economic or social means would probably end up more likely doing the tough military jobs, but also because a change in the status quo would remove the great equalizer?that ROK military service represents: whether one is rich or poor, from Ch?lla or Ky?ngsang or Seoul, highly educated or poorly educated, every ROK male is expected to take time to do their military service (or some equivalent time in special civil service) unless they fall into a very narrow set of exemptions.

(Truth be told, what I'd really to see is a shortened national service period ? say, eighteen months versus the current two years ? that is required of all citizens, including females,?that can be military service, volunteer service, or some civil service.)

So why is the media talking about military service at all? From discussions with policymakers and academics, I believe that one major impetus toward a change is that ROK military service hinders the fertility rate, which is abysmally low in the Republic of Korea.

Its Demography 101 that the longer the period is that people are screwing a spouse or would-be spouse who is fertile, the more babies they will produce on average (even with high abortion rates).?But military service takes men out of some of the most productive years for their partner's fertility. At least for the two years or so they do military service and then longer as they try to finish up school and then seek work to pay for said children. (This is also a drag on economic output; South Korea pays a huge amount in real costs and social and economic opportunity costs with the current level of military readiness.)

Ending mandatory military service could tick up the fertility rate by a few tenths of a percent, which could have a dramatic impact on public policy in the coming decades. This may be an enticing idea as legislators realize that South Korea can't maintain the population on immigration and hopes for a unified Korea alone.

(And I should admit that the all-gender mandatory national service idea of mine would, at best, be a wash in terms of the fertility rate.)

A new study by University of British Columbia researchers shows that although 90 per cent of East Asian adolescents in British Columbia are not sexually active, those who are may engage in high-risk sexual behaviours.

"Most East Asian-Canadian adolescents have not had sex, but among those who have, one in four used alcohol or drugs before sex last time, and one-third have had two or more partners," says Yuko Homma, lead author and a post-doctoral research fellow with UBC School of Nursing. "Nearly half the girls had not used a condom."

"Since about half of these students were new Canadians and spoke a language other than English at home, we wonder if they might be missing key information in sexual health classes because of language barriers," says Elizabeth Saewyc, senior author and Professor with UBC School of Nursing.

This study is also the first population-based survey in Canada that asked East Asian adolescents their reasons for abstaining from sex: the top two reasons for waiting were not feeling ready and wanting to meet the right person.

Published recently in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality, the study used data from the British Columbia Adolescent Health Survey to examine the prevalence of sexual behaviour among both Canadian-born and immigrant East Asian adolescents in B.C. The study looked at contraceptive use, health outcomes as a result of sexual activity, and differences in behaviour among male and female adolescents.

    Background

The study, Sexual health and risk behavior among East Asian adolescents in British Columbia, is available on request. Yuko Homma and Elizabeth Saewyc are available for interviews by contacting Tracy Tang at 604-827-3367 or tracy.tang@nursing.ubc.ca.

Quote from Nancy Edwards, Scientific Director, Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Population and Public Health (study funder):

"Through the use of large-scale school surveys, this study shines an important light on previously unknown sexual health behaviours of East Asian adolescents. The results argue for the need to tailor programs that take into account where adolescents live."

Chris Wright, Hollis Thompson and Henry Sims Impress in NBA Summer League

It will be a long road for any of them to make an NBA roster, but former Hoyas Chris Wright, Hollis Thompson, and Henry Sims have impressed observers in the NBA Summer League.

Wright, who played in the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks last season, had a solid showing for the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA Summer League in Orlando and is now playing in Las Vegas for the San Antonio Spurs. From Nets 101:

The other player that was impressive throughout the week was point guard Chris Wright out of Georgetown. Wright is battling multiple sclerosis but is not letting it stop him from accomplishing his goal of making an NBA roster. He played extremely well this week, showing some range from deep and running the offense smoothly when the ball was in his hand. Although there will not be space for Wright in Brooklyn this season, he will have another chance to make an NBA roster in Las Vegas when he plays with the San Antonio Spurs.

Thompson, who signed a 2-year deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder before last season but was never able to crack the NBA roster, is playing alongside Chris Wright for the San Antonio Spurs this summer. From Pounding the Rock:

My player to watch for the game, Hollis Thompson, had anther quiet game where he kept doing the right things. He kept rebounding, defending, and playing within the system all night long; and even had a big play down the stretch where he stole an inbounds pass right under the bucket and scored with an and-one to keep the game alive. Now, I don't think that Thompson has a shot to make this team. and if anyone is added to the Spurs from the summer league roster it's likely to be be DeShaun Thomas because of the Spurs forever needing more shooters. But, I still enjoy watching Thompson play. In a way, his game reminds one of cliches like "He does the little things" and "He plays the right way." It most likely won't be with the Spurs, but Thompson has a game that will help somebody somewhere in need of a role player.

Sims, who played with the Knicks in the Summer League last season and played his first NBA game with the New Orleans Hornets, is playing with the Charlotte Bobcats this summer alongside former Hoya Patrick Ewing, Jr. Though there wasn't much I could find out there on Ewing's performance, here's a nifty pic of him. From the Charlotte Observer:

I don't know whether any of the non-contract players on the Bobcats' squad will be invited to training camp, but Georgetown center Henry Sims is intriguing. He's quite a good athlete for his size. Not so much in basketball skills, but there's something to work with there.

And from Bobcats blog Rufus on Fire:

Henry Sims could work his way into the training camp roster. He has some solid talent and skill and could be a decent third guy in the frontcourt depth chart, and an inexpensive option at that. He might not make it onto the team completely, but he could do well pushing the frontcourt players.

Best of luck to all three former Hoyas as they pursue their NBA dreams.

New Pussy Riot video lambastes Putin, Russian energy industry

Pussy Riot Like a Red Prison
A portrait of Igor Sechin, the head of state oil firm Rosneft and a close Vladimir Putin ally, in Pussy Riot's new music video, 'Like a Red Prison.'

    Report an error

MOSCOW - Four members of Pussy Riot danced on an oil pipeline in garish masks, tights and short dresses in a new video released on Tuesday, comparing President Vladimir Putin to an "ayatollah in Iran" and attacking his allies in Russia's rich energy sector.

In their first performance in almost a year, posted on Youtube, the feminist punk protest collective also accused Putin of being homophobic after passage of what is widely seen as anti-gay legislation.

Like a Red Prison is one of Pussy Riot's few performances since its anti-Putin protest in a Russian Orthodox church last year won global fame for the band members but led to three of them being jailed.

In the new video, which includes profanities, one of the women pours what appears to be oil over a large portrait of Igor Sechin, the head of state oil firm Rosneft and a close Putin ally.

Another clutches a microphone and while a third brandishes a guitar as they clamber onto the roof of a petrol station. In another segment of the more than three-minute-long clip, band members climb up a gas flare. At times they are watched by mystified workers in hardhats as they writhe to the music.

The aim of the video, the band explains, is to draw attention to what they say is Putin's practice of allowing only close allies to share in the vast proceeds generated by the Russian energy industry. Rosneft declined comment.

In another part of the video, the women reprise their criticism of Putin's close ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.

"Your president is like an ayatollah in Iran and your church is like in the United Arab Emirates," they chant, without explaining the reference to the United Arab Emirates.

Much of the video also refers to "homophobic vermin" in Russia and denounces Putin as a homophobe after the president signed into law legislation banning the spread of gay "propaganda" among minors. Russian officials have denied the law is homophobic.

Pussy Riot and other opposition activists such as anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny, who is mentioned in the video and is on trial on theft charges, accuse Putin of cracking down on dissent since returning to the presidency in May last year after protests against his 13-year rule.

The Kremlin denies there has been a clampdown.

Three members of Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in jail last August for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" over their "punk prayer" in Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February 2012.

Yekaterina Samutsevich was freed last October but Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who wrote some of the lyrics on the new video, are still in a prison colony.

The trial and punishment of the women angered many Western governments and they won support from international celebrities such as Madonna and ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.

But the 2012 protest and sentence divided Russians. Many people, liberals and conservatives alike, disapproved of the protest because it took place in a church but fewer thought they deserved such a touch sentence, opinion polls showed.

    THIS WEEK:

By Ken Haapala, Executive Vice President, Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP)

The Climate Speech: President Obama gave a long awaited speech announcing his climate plan. In an emotional appeal, he invoked the spirit of Apollo missions, apparently unaware that some of the veterans of the Apollo team formed The Right Climate Stuff research team (TRCS) that directly challenges the claims of the official Washington science that human emissions of carbon dioxide are causing dangerous global warming.

The research team found that 1) the science that predicts the extent of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is not settled; 2) there is no convincing physical evidence of Catastrophic AGW; 3) computer models need to be validated before being used in critical decision-making, 4) we have time to study global climate changes and improve our prediction accuracy, 5) the US government is over-reacting to AGW, and 6) a wider range of solution options should be studied for global warming or cooling threats from any credible cause.

The president announced sweeping new powers for the EPA, including regulating existing coal fired power plants, without bothering to ask Congress for the requisite legislation. In so doing he is claiming authoritarian powers to fight climate change which has been ongoing for hundreds of millions of years.

The president used the term carbon pollution some 20 times, demonstrating how the unfortunate Supreme Court decision that carbon dioxide is a pollutant that can be regulated under the Clean Air Act has infected official thinking in Washington. Many do not realize they are carbon based life forms and that in the act of breathing they increase the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) of the air they use by 100 times, inhaling 4 parts per 10,000 and exhaling 400 parts per 10,000. In his speech the president lumped carbon with mercury, sulfur, and arsenic, known toxins.

The speech contained numerous scientific and factual challenges. But this is official Washington science, where un-validated computer models are used to create fear of the future, including global warming, climate change, and extreme weather events, as if they had never happened before. The official science is grossly misleading and, contrary to the models, atmospheric warming stopped a decade ago, and surface warming stopped over 15 years ago. The official science is creating fear in the public that natural variability in climate is unusual and that variability can be controlled by government.

The president presented the issue as if he was on high moral ground, equating skeptics to members of the Flat Earth Society and insisted that urgent action is needed to protect future generations. If there is any moral issue to the speech, it is misleading the public about science and public health to assert authorities control over significant components of the economy. Unfortunately, if his plan is implemented, the major burdens will become evident long after he has left office. Please see Article #2, links under President Obama?s Climate Speech and http://www.therightclimatestuff.com/SummaryPrelimReport.html. The articles cover a wide range of opinion, and they are in no particular order. Generally, the newspapers that identify themselves a liberal supported the president?s authoritarian expansion of power and did not insist on legislative action.

    **************

Carbon, Cost or Benefit? Last week?s TWTW discussed how the concept of Social Cost of Carbon, which has never been approved by Congress, therefore is an authoritarian assertion, is being manipulated by Washington bureaucrats. An article in the Wall Street Journal, discusses this further. TWTW will start a subheading titled the Social Benefits of Carbon. Please Article #3 and Social Benefits of Carbon.

    **************

Another Yucca Mountain? Secretary of Energy Moniz asserted that the Administration is not waging a war on coal and that the Climate Plan has $8 Billion for carbon capture and storage. Those who believe this will become effective and affordable would do well to review the history of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository, which this Administration stopped, costing the nuclear energy tens of billions on a failed government promise. In 2009, the EPA issued a rule limiting the radiation doses from Yucca Mountain for up to 1,000,000 years!

Further, the requirement under the climate plan that the EPA will issue CO2 limits for new plants and existing plants achieves the goal of stopping construction of new coal-fired power plants to replace less efficient older plants. No one would start a plant under the cloud of new regulations to be issued later. Please see link under Energy Issues ? US.

    **************

Flat Earth Society: President Obama?s equating those skeptical of the Washington science that CO2 emissions cause dangerous global warming brought out a few amusing responses with the Flat Earth Society. It turns out that the president of the society believes official climate science. Lubo? Motl has fun with this by suggesting a merger of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Flat Earth Society. Please see link under Questioning the Orthodoxy.

    **************

NIPCC in China: There are further press releases covering the Chinese Academy of Sciences announcing the translation of the two major reports by the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) and the event surrounding the announcement. The purpose translation was to promote discussion and it was not an endorsement of the report. Please see Article # 1 and links under NIPCC in China.

    **************

Model Issues: Last week?s TWTW contained a discussion on the meaning of the mean of an ensemble of models. Judith Curry presented a discussion, limited to weather models that are constantly tested and updated. For the technically inclined please see link under Model Issues.

    **************

A Political Shift: Judith Curry suggests that the response of the Republicans to the President?s climate plan may indicate a shift in policy from questioning the science to focusing on the costs of the plan. Curry endorses this approach.

This approach may be easier to explain to the general public. But the quality of the science still needs to be addressed. As discussed in last week?s TWTW, the FY 2012 U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) is $2.6 Billion. This does not include the monies being spent by the 13 agencies that make up the program. The 2009 USGCRP (different name) report was misleading. The draft 2013 report was shoddy, at best. If the purpose is to learn about climate change, rather than creating illusionary models, the entire program must be turned around to first understand the natural causes of climate change ? and then understand the human influence. This turn around can only by accomplished sharp questioning of all the agencies involved. Please see link under The Political Games Continue.

    **************

Fracking Fears: A new study by Robert Jackson, Professor of Environmental Science at Duke, confirmed that some water wells in northeastern Pennsylvania in Marcellus shale basin showed high concentrations of methane, ethane and propane. But according to Jackson, the likely cause was faulty well construction, improper sealing; not hydraulic fracturing. Please see link under Oil Spills, Gas Leaks & Consequences

    **************

Gas Rich Britain? The UK Geological Survey released a study of northern England that indicates that the Bowland shale basin may contain the largest amount of shale gas in the world, up to 1300 trillion cubic feet. Of course much more exploration is necessary to determine how much is economically recoverable. The discovery will cause great consternation among the no fossil fuels politicians. Please see links under Oil and Natural Gas ? the Future or the Past?

    **************

Climate Science Lesson Plans: The International Climate Science Coalition has announced lesson plans for teaching climate science in middle and high schools. SEPP has not reviewed the plans, but is familiar with the science advisor, Bob Carter, who is an editor of the NIPCC reports, and, no doubt, the program is scientifically sound. Please see link under Questioning the Orthodoxy.

    **************

Sustainable Wind Power? Probably unintentionally, an article in the Guardian newspaper stated: ?Wind turbine operators and manufacturers have been holding off on tens of billions of pounds of investment in the UK, over fears that subsidies would be cut to unsustainable levels.? SEPP has long maintained that without subsidies wind and solar power are unsustainable on a commercial scale. Please see link under Subsidies and Mandates Forever.

    **************

Amplifications and Corrections: Harold Doiron of The Right Climate Stuff Team corrected TWTW description of his word on the Apollo program. It should have read: ?He developed the lunar lander touchdown dynamics simulation for toppling stability and energy absorption used to guide design of the landing gear, develop landing techniques, and help select safe landing sites.?

Reader Jens Kieffer-Olsen challenges David Archibald?s hypothesis that temperatures from central England indicate we are two years away from a 1740 event which was one of extreme cold following a period of warmth. Kieffer-Olsen asserts that the cause of the event was the 1739 eruption of Mt. Hekla in Iceland which killed about 20% of the population. An internet search, including one by Anthony Watts failed to uncover such an eruption. Kieffer-Olsen provided an account written in 1914, but it is in Swedish. The google translations is poor but it does state the eruption killed 9,238 people and significant livestock. http://runeberg.org/univers/0476.html

In two years we can test Archibald?s hypothesis.

    **************

Number of the Week: 3.7%. That is the percentage in US carbon dioxide emissions from 2011 to 2012, according to the Energy Information Administration. Except for 2010, emissions have dropped every year since 2007. Lower natural gas prices have resulted in less carbon-intensive natural gas electricity generation replacing higher carbon intensive coal generation. The mild winter contributed as well. SEPP adds that the sustained economic stagnation (growth rate less than 2%) contributes as well.

Modeling Climate Feedbacks Based on Short-Term Climate Variations

Reference: Koumoutsaris, S. 2013. What can we learn about climate feedbacks from short-term climate variations? Tellus A 65: 10.3402/tellusa.v65i0.18887

    http://nipccreport.org/articles/2013/jun/25jun2013a1.html

Koumoutsaris concludes that his several analyses indicate that ?important aspects of the ENSO variability are still poorly understood and/or simulated.? And in the case of cloud feedback, he says that it is difficult to come to ?any firm conclusion? ? even on the sign of the feedback. And when these phenomena are so poorly simulated- even to the point where the direction of change of one of them remains unknown ? it should be clear to all that the climate-modeling enterprise still has a long, long way to go before it can be considered good enough to serve as a basis for energy policy decisions that are already dictating various aspects of human behavior.

How Southern Ocean Echinoderm Larvae Respond to Elevated CO

Reference: Yu, P.C., Sewell, M.A., Matson, P.G., Rivest, E.B., Kapsenberg, L. and Hofmann, G.E. 2013. Growth attenuation with developmental schedule progression in embryos and early larvae of Sterechinus neumayeri raised under elevated CO2. PLOS ONE 8: e52448.

    http://nipccreport.org/articles/2013/jun/25jun2013a2.html

After all was said and done, Yu et al. concluded, in the final sentence of their paper?s abstract, that ?effects of elevated CO2 representative of near future climate scenarios are proportionally minor on these early development stages.?

Recent Antarctic Sea Ice Extent in CMIP5 Models

Reference: Turner, J., Bracegirdle, T.J., Phillips, T., Marshall, G.J. and Hosking, J.S. 2013. An initial assessment of Antarctic sea ice extent in the CMIP5 models. Journal of Climate 26: 1473-1484.

    http://nipccreport.org/articles/2013/jun/25jun2013a3.html

In summing up their findings, Turner et al. conclude that ?many of the SIE biases in the CMIP3 runs remain in CMIP5.? More particularly, for example, they state that ?as with CMIP3, the models do not simulate the recent increase in Antarctic SIE observed in the satellite data.?

Seven Millennia of Hurricane Activity along the Coast of Belize

Reference: McCloskey, T.A. and Liu, K.-b. 2012. A 7000 year record of paleohurricane activity from a coastal wetland in Belize. The Holocene 23: 278-291.

    http://nipccreport.org/articles/2013/jun/26jun2013a2.html

In light of these diverse findings, McCloskey and Liu conclude that (1) ?both the climatic conditions favoring tropical cyclones and the frequency of landfall for major hurricanes have exhibited multi-centennial variability over the late Holocene,? and that (2) ?the timing of hyperactive periods varies regionally across the North Atlantic.? Hence, their work would appear to suggest that there are no hard-and-fast rules about how climate change may impact the development of future storms in these regions.

    http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/06/19/1221978110.abstract

[SEPP Director Tom Sheahen points out the ignorance in this article including: "Basically, if you install a solar array in the sunny Southern California desert, that power mostly replaces electricity made with relatively clean natural gas. In contrast, if you installed the same solar panels in considerably less sunny Ohio, you?d be primarily replacing capacity at a coal-burning power plant, reducing far more air pollutants than in California."

    A) the capital cost of a solar panel is the same in either place, and Ohio is "considerably less sunny", so you'd get less energy out, and hence it takes longer to get your money back.

    B) when electricity enters the grid, the distance to where it gets used is a minor factor. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but the majority of the losses in transmission and distribution are due to transformers, not due to the I^2R loss associated with wire length.

    C) the image of electricity moving from one point to another like water in a pipe is straight out of junior-high science class, and doesn't explain AC power transmission. There is an entire industry/enterprise/business called "wheeling" about moving power around the grid at different times. Quickly summarizing, the grid loses 8% of the energy (and 10% of the power), regardless of where power enters or is taken off.?]
