DALLAS ? Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points, 11 in the final 6-plus minutes, Shawn Marion added 16, and the Dallas Mavericks held on to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 96-92 on Monday night.

Jason Terry, Vince Carter and Brendan Haywood all contributed 10 points for the Mavs, who've won 10 in a row at home against the Clippers and extended their overall winning streak to four games.

Caron Butler of the Clippers scored a season-high 23 points against his former team, and Blake Griffin added 20 points.

Chris Paul had 16 points and nine assists for the Clippers, but Griffin's problems from the foul line cost his team as he missed seven of nine free throws.

The Clippers, who completed a 4-2 road trip, haven't beaten the defending NBA champs in Dallas since April 19, 2006.

Dallas took control with a 7-0 fourth-quarter run capped by Marion's layup with 4:48 remaining for an 86-83 edge.

Griffin had a chance to get the Clippers closer, but missed five straight free throws until connecting with 2:15 to play to pull his team within two points at 86-84.

Jason Kidd set up Terry for a layup with 2:02 left, and Nowitzki intercepted Griffin's pass with 1:47 showing, and drained two free throws to extend Dallas' edge to 90-84.

Griffin's three-point play with 1:24 remaining and Kenyon Martin's layup with 1 minute left narrowed the Mavericks' lead to 90-89.

Nowitzki drained a 19-footer from the right wing and, after Marion stole the ball from Martin, converted two free throws with 21.2 seconds left for a 94-89 advantage. Paul's 3-pointer with 17.8 seconds got the Clippers within two points, and Butler missed a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left.

Delonte West made two free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The Clippers carried a 76-74 advantage into the final quarter.

Haywood worked inside for 10 of Dallas' first 22 points and the Mavs carried a 27-19 lead into the second quarter.

Dallas was in front at halftime 55-47 behind 22-for-38 field-goal accuracy (58 percent).

Butler, who received a championship ring from the Mavs in pregame ceremonies, got rolling early when he connected on his first three 3-point attempts in the first quarter.

The Clippers ended a 10-game overall losing streak against the Mavs on Jan. 18 with a 91-89 win in Los Angeles. Chauncey Billups hit the winning 3-pointer with 1 second left. Billups is out for the season with a torn left Achilles' tendon sustained in a game on Feb. 6.

Paul sat out the season's first meeting with Dallas due to a strained left hamstring.

Notes: Butler was a member of the Mavericks' title-winning team last season but missed the final 53 games of the regular season plus the playoffs with a ruptured right patellar tendon. Amateur video shows something moving down a river in Iceland that some say could be a sea creature like the Loch Ness Monster. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Further information about the "river monster" seen in a video from Iceland has led to the likeliest explanation for the snake-shaped phenomenon ? and it's not Nessie.

The video, which seems to show some sort of subarctic anaconda making its way upstream through Iceland's Jokulsa River, was recorded by 67-year-old farmer Hjortur Kjerulf and initially distributed online last week by RUV television. The clip went viral on the Internet, even though skeptical observers said it looked more like a computer-generated hoax, a robot designed to play a trick on somebody or a snagged fishing net.

Now the consensus is leaning toward the fishing-net explanation.

Writing for Discovery News, investigator Benjamin Radford says Finland's Miisa McKeown has analyzed the video, matching up the position of the monster's head with relation to static reference points. Her conclusion? The "monster" is actually stuck in one place on the river. The snaky thing looks as if it's swimming upstream because water is streaming past it. It's the moving water that creates the illusion of a swimming snake.

Radford said the fact that the wriggling object remained in the same place for the several minutes it took Kjerulf to finish his coffee strongly suggests that it was a net or a long piece of cloth, caught on a branch or a rock lying beneath the surface of the river. Its snaky shape is due to chunks of ice hanging onto the net. You can see similar chunks floating past in the video.

BRT Realty Trust Reports First Quarter Results ... - Construction Digital

GREAT NECK, NY--(Marketwire - February 9, 2012) - BRT REALTY TRUST (NYSE: BRT), a real estate investment trust primarily engaged in the business of originating and holding for investment senior mortgage loans secured by commercial and multi-family real estate in the United States, today announced operating results for the three months ended December 31, 2011.

Operating Results:

Total revenues for the three months ended December 31, 2011 were approximately $3.15 million, an increase of 29% or $702,000 from the three months ended December 31, 2010.?The increase was due primarily to the increase in interest on real estate loans.?This increase generally resulted from the increase in the average balance of earning loans outstanding, which is attributable to increased loan originations in fiscal 2011.?For the three months ended December 31, 2011, BRT originated approximately $25.5 million in loans compared to $28.3 million in the corresponding period in the prior year.

Total expenses for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 decreased by approximately $321,000 or 8.9%, from the quarter ended December 31, 2010.?The decrease is attributable to decreases in interest on borrowed funds, foreclosure related professional fees and operating expenses relating to real estate properties.?Partially offsetting the decrease was a $243,000 increase in general and administrative expenses.

Income from continuing operations was $3.38 million or $.24 per share for the current three months compared to a loss of $508,000 or $.04 per share for the three months ended December 31, 2010.?The increase is due to a $3.19 million gain on the sale of a loan held for sale and the increase in revenues and decrease in expenses described above.?Partially offsetting the increase was the loss of $18,000 on sale of available-for-sale securities compared to a $421,000 gain from such sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 as well as a loss of $75,000 in equity of unconsolidated ventures compared to $49,000 in earnings from such ventures in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

Discontinued operations for the current quarter reflect a $490,000 gain on sale of a real estate asset.

Net income attributable to common shareholders was $3.9 million in the current quarter compared to a loss of $508,000 in the corresponding quarter of last year.

Subsequent Event:

From late December 2011 through February 2012, a subsidiary of the Newark Joint Venture entered into a series of agreements pursuant to which the subsidiary obtained access to financing of approximately $50 million to construct two buildings at the Teachers Village site located in Newark, NJ.?The buildings will be used for charter schools and retail space.?It is anticipated that construction of these buildings will be completed in 2013.?These funds will be released to the joint venture from time-to-time upon satisfaction of specified conditions.?The Newark Joint Venture is a consolidated subsidiary of BRT in which BRT owns a 50.1% equity interest.

Some lions in the wild now live within a ?landscape of fear? as a result of threats posed by humans.

Lions have drastically changed the way they behave and perceive their environment because of new, numerous and deadly clashes with humans, according to a new study, published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

NEWS: Wild Chimps Outwit Hunters

?The ?landscape of fear? represents relative levels of predation risk as peaks and valleys that reflect the level of fear of predation an animal experiences in different parts of its territory,? lead author Marion Valeix of the University of Oxford?s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit told Discovery News.

She and colleagues Graham Hemson, Andrew Loveridge, Gus Mills and David Macdonald explained that most prey animals live within a fearful mindset that keeps them on a constant, stressed out watch. Now even high-level predators may live this way too when they exist in or around human-dominated landscapes.

The researchers studied the behavior, foraging and territory of lions living in one of the last natural migratory systems, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park in Botswana, where abundant packs of Burchell?s zebra and blue wildebeest live in different parts of the park on a seasonal basis.

Lands used by people for grazing their livestock surround the protected wilderness area. This creates a human-lion conflict, since when the zebra and wildebeest move en masse out of lion areas, many lions will resort to hunting livestock, such as cattle, to avoid losing established territories and reproductive loss, among other reasons.

GPS tracking of the lions determined that the major driver of lion behavior was the risk of conflict with humans. While the herders in Botswana do not always have easy access to firearms, some do.

Hemson said ?we extracted lead shot from one lion in the study and another lion was shot in the spine and paralyzed. As such, we have evidence that lions may survive encounters with better armed people, and these surely make a lasting impression? on the other lions.

He does not think lions are born with this fear, since cubs are very inquisitive and would regularly follow his ?vehicle and circle it and even test the bumper with their teeth and paws.? But through their mother and other pride members, they learn to fear humans as they grow up.

While a handful of very large protected areas, such as in Kalahari national parks, may permit lions to live without encroaching on humans, ?these areas are getting fewer and fewer,? Hemson said.

In Botswana, the researchers hope herders will reduce the abundance of livestock left unattended at night, since these attract lions that are looking for a meal but are also trying to avoid humans. They also call for overall improved livestock husbandry, which might include more consistent use of protective enclosures.

The scientists, however, lament that during this present difficult socioeconomic time, such measures are not likely to be implemented anytime soon. They hope an incentive structure might be put into place for herders, providing them with financial and other rewards to make the improvements and to promote tolerance of lions and other wildlife.

Johan du Toit, head of the Wildland Resources Department at Utah State University, wrote in a commentary, ?The Makgadikgadi cattle herders and lions exemplify the human-wildlife conflict that has existed ever since livestock domestication began. Now, however, with advanced weapons and poisons, expanding human and livestock populations and reduced indigenous prey abundances, humans have virtually eradicated large predators ? and big cats in particular ? from the world?s rangelands.?

Du Toit, however, agrees that ?there could be smarter ways of mitigating the conflict.?

He points out that prey animals benefit from fear, using it to avoid risks in parts of their territory. Now that we know wild lions can experience similar near-continuous fear, he believes ?smart managers could make more use of it in mitigating human-wildlife conflict.?

Jersey City clears 'Jersey Shore' spinoff (AP)

JERSEY CITY, N.J. ? Jersey City taxpayers won't be footing the bill for police assigned to security for the women of "Jersey Shore" and all the attention that comes with them.

New Jersey's second largest city has issued a permit to producers to film a spinoff of the reality series, featuring Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley. Filming is expected to begin later this month in the city's Grove Street Path neighborhood.

Police spokesman Edgar Martinez said Thursday the production company in charge of the show will pay for off-duty police officers to provide security and will pay for any additional officers if they are needed. In addition, he said, the production crew won't be taking parking spots from residents but will use pay lots.

Nearby Hoboken last week denied the show a permit to film, citing safety and quality of life concerns for residents of the city along the Hudson River.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said he believes the show is an opportunity to promote the city.
