Nintendo Japan announces white 32GB Wii U, Wiimote quick charger

Nintendo Japan announces white 32GB Wii U, Wiimote quick charger, special Luigi edition 3DS XL and

An official extended battery for its Wii U Gamepad isn't the only thing Nintendo Japan posted on its website tonight, as it also added a white option for the Wii U 32GB Premium set, a 30th Anniversary Luigi special edition 3DS XL and quick charging option for the Wiimote. Surveys surfaced earlier this year suggesting a fast charging option on the way for the Wiimote, and in Japan gamers will be able to add the accessory -- consisting of replacement battery / backplate and charging stand, pictured after the break -- starting July 13th for 4,200 yen ($41) , and 2,625 yen ($26) for the battery alone. That should allow not only faster charging, but also longer battery life than Wii gamers have been used to.

July 13th is the same day the white Wii U premium will arrive as well, coming at the same price and packing the same accessories as the existing black 32GB console. Finally, Nintendo listed all the details for the special Luigi edition 3DS XL announced recently on Nintendo Direct. Of course, none of these are the games that even Iwata admits the Wii U needs, but a few more choices can't hurt, can they?

Could 'Man of Steel' star Henry Cavill be WB's 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.'?

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - WB's "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill is now in talks to be the studio's "Man From U.N.C.L.E.," TheWrap has learned.

Cavill is making a deal to play Napoleon Solo in Guy Ritchie's feature adaptation of the classic 1960s TV series.

Cruise left the project last week in order to focus his attention on producing "Mission: Impossible 5" for Paramount and Skydance.

With "Man of Steel" buzz swirling in Burbank, WB execs are confident that Cavill has what it takes to launch a franchise that lacks the built-in audience of Superman fans. The British star of "The Tudors" previously powered Relativity's "Immortals" to a worldwide gross of $226 million.

Ritchie had been expecting to start production in the fall with Armie Hammer co-starring as Illya Kuryakin, Solo's fellow agent in the United Network Command for Law Enforcement. Robert Vaughan and David McCallum originated the roles on the 60s spy series.

Ritchie is producing with Lionel Wigram and John Davis.

It's early days, but CAA-repped Cavill doesn't have any projects crowding his fall schedule, as WB and Legendary East's supernatural movie "The Great Wall" has been postponed indefinitely.

Hubble sees a swirl of star formation

May 28, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the image of an unusual galaxy -- a beautiful, glittering swirl named, rather un-poetically, J125013.50+073441.5. A glowing haze of material seems to engulf the galaxy, stretching out into space in different directions and forming a fuzzy streak in this image. It is a starburst galaxy -- a name given to galaxies that show unusually high rates of star formation. The regions where new stars are being born are highlighted by sparkling bright blue regions along the galactic arms.

Studying starburst galaxies can tell us a lot about galactic evolution and star formation. These galaxies start off with huge amounts of gas, which is used to form new stars. This period of furious star formation is only a phase; once all the gas is used up, this star birth slows down. Other famous starbursts captured by Hubble include the Antennae Galaxies and Messier 82, the latter of which is forming new stars ten times faster than our galaxy, the Milky Way.

The data for this image were collected using Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 as part of a study named LARS (Lyman Alpha Reference Sample), which is investigating the interaction between radiation and matter in relatively nearby starburst galaxies.

FNF to buy Lender Processing Services for $2.9 billion

(Reuters) - Title insurer Fidelity National Financial Inc said it will buy Lender Processing Services Inc for about $2.9 billion (1.9 billion pounds) in cash and stock to grow its mortgage servicing business.

FNF said the offer, which works out to $33.25 per LPS share, represents a premium of 19 percent to the average 30-day closing price of LPS shares. LPS shares were up about 3 percent at $33.90 in early trade.

LPS shares have risen just over 13 percent since the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that a deal was in the works.

The insurer said it would pay half the deal value in cash and the rest in FNF stock, subject to some final adjustments.

FNF, which owns a number of restaurant chains, an automotive business and a payment solutions business apart from its core insurance businesses, has been modelling itself as a mini Berkshire Hathaway Inc

.

The insurer said the deal values its shares at $25.48, which represents an exchange ratio of 0.652 shares per LPS share.

FNF expects to issue about 57.4 million shares, or 20 percent of its diluted outstanding shares, as the stock component of the deal.

The company said it plans to merge its ServiceLink business with LPS, and sell a 19 percent stake in the combined company to private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners for about $381 million.

"We have set a target of $100 million for cost synergies and are confident that we can meet or exceed that goal," FNF Chairman William Foley said in a statement.

FNF said the deal would add 11.3 percent to its pro-forma 2012 net earnings.

"We have significant experience and familiarity with LPS from our previous ownership of these businesses. This combination will create a larger, broader, more diversified and recurring revenue base for FNF," Foley said.

LPS was spun off in 2008 from Fidelity National Information Services Inc , which was formed in 2006 in a merger between an FNF unit and Certegy Inc.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch and J.P. Morgan acted as financial advisers to FNF, while Credit Suisse Securities and Goldman Sachs advised LPS.

The deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter, includes a "go-shop" period through July 7 and includes a break-up fee of about 1.25 percent of the total value if LPS terminates the deal for a superior offer.

FNF, which has a market value of about $5.7 billion, posted a higher first-quarter profit earlier this month, as it earned more premiums from its direct title insurance business.

FNF shares were up 3 percent at $27 on Tuesday morning on the New York Stock Exchange.

Crystal-clear method for distinguishing between glass and fluids

May 28, 2013 ? Many solids are produced from melting. Depending on how quickly they cool off, invariably, internal tensile stresses begin to build up. One example are Prince Rupert's Drops, or Dutch tears: you can hit their thick end with a hammer without breaking them while a slight pressure applied to their thin end is enough to shatter the entire tear.

The properties of safety or even gorilla glass are determined to a large extent by their internal tensile stresses. However, until now, our understanding of the unique characteristics exhibited by the condition of the glass as compared with a tough molten mass was spotty at best. Now, a collaboration of several German and Cretian research teams has offered a surprisingly simple model to explain the difference between glass and molten materials.

The HZB's contribution was by chemist Dr. Miriam Siebenb?rger of the Institute for Soft Matter and Functional Materials. Siebenb?rger came up with a rather elegant model system consisting of spherical plastic particles in aqueous solution (a mixture known as a suspension). Due to the tiny size of the particles -- each having a diameter of around 150 nanometer -- they float in the aqueous solution but never sediment. The nanoparticles are covered by a thermosensitive "shell," whose thickness can be adjusted by varying the temperature, causing them to shrink and grow reversibly in a continuous manner. This allows the chemist to convert her samples from a densely packaged "glass" into a less dense, more fluid state, in other words melt them down. Through a series of rheological measurements, Miriam Siebenb?rger was able to determine how quickly the internal tensions in her samples could relax at different particle packing densities.

For this purpose, she placed the samples in-between two parallel plates, which she counter-rotated relative to each other to produce shearing forces within the sample. After reaching a stationary state of shearing stress at a constant shearing rate, the rotating plates were actively stopped. Next, the force it takes to stop the plates to zero shear rate, and which is a gauge for internal tensions, was measured. In the process, the critical difference between the fluid and glassy state became apparent:

Whereas the fluid tensions dissipated without a trace, a proportion of the tensions was maintained in the glassy state. The results are fitting nicely into the theoretical model developed by a group of Constance physicists who calculated the behavior of hard spheres at different packing densities. What's more, measurements of the internal tensile stresses and dynamics of larger-sized particles (in the mm range) by Cretian and D?sseldorf researchers and the molecular dynamics simulation of hard spheres by a team of researchers from Cologne and Mainz exhibit similar patterns of behavior. The scientists are convinced that their findings apply to all types of glass that are created as a result of their high packing densities including metallic glass, which is mainly used for high-tech applications. The researchers' findings have now been published in the renowned scientific journal, Physical Review Letters and is selected as Focus in Physics" and "Editor's Suggestion."

Pavone's "Hipsters Wanted" Ad In New York - Business Insider

Pavone, a branding firm in Pennsylvania, placed a "Hipsters Wanted"?ad in New York Magazine.?

It's hoping to recruit groovy candidates that non-New York states apparently "don't have."

The classified ad specifies "proven Dumbo experience preferred" and that "minimum two years mustache and/or bangs experience" is a plus as is "sarcasm and upper-middle-class terminology."

Another requirement is that prospective candidates be "capable of articulating brands in a range of voices as far apart as Zach Braff after bad sushi and Beyonce skydiving."

Wendy Steiner from The Bold Italic, a news site based in San Francisco, first pointed out the listing which prompted her to ask "the sick, sad question ... are?hipsters the new Nespresso machines??That is, you want them in the office to look pretty, but they're overpriced and you never get that much out of them."

Steiner seemed legitimately disturbed by the ad and wondered whether the agency was playing a joke "on the new biz dev guy that everyone thinks is a tool for suggesting hiring more hipsters."?

Pavone Director of Communications, Michael Lane puts her mind to rest explaining that?"This ad is real! One of our senior creative directors wrote the ad feeling that it would be a playful way to share some of the spirit of our agency culture. And, as the ad said: 'sense of sarcasm required.'"

Steiner's misgivings notwithstanding, the earnest ad has been a relative success.

As Lane confides, it has elicited "about 30 applications so far...from as far away as the U.K...[and an]?outpouring of responses just to say they liked the ad."?

Beyonce scolds fan for slapping her on behind

Celebs

A fan in Copenhagen, Denmark, did what no one thought was a good idea when he reached out and slapped Beyonce on her backside during her concert on Monday.

It's all captured in a video on YouTube appropriately titled "The stupid guy that slapped Beyonce." As the singer strutted down the stage singing her song, "Irreplaceable," a man standing in the front row joined in for part of the chorus. "To the left, to the left, everything you own in the box to the left ..."

As Beyonce withdrew the microphone and began to retreat back upstage, the man reached out and gave JAY-Z's WIFE a slap on the rear.

"I will have you escorted out of here now ... all right?" Beyonce says to the man before launching back into the song. Here's another view from another YouTube video.

Outdoor Power with Home Depot | Honea Express

Boys Hose

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

We rent, which means there is a fine line between the amount of work and investment we want to put into our yard and how frowzy we are willing to let it get. Our landlord, unfortunately, has no qualms about the latter, and aside from an occasional mowing we are generally on our own.

Luckily, my family enjoys a good project and working with our hands?meaning we hardly had to bribe the kids at all. It?s that fun!

Boys at Work

Early photographic evidence of the boys working on stuff.

We decided that something we could do together, and for very little money, was to build some mounted flower beds on the end of the house and fill the patch of dirt and weeds that pass as desert chic with a sustainable garden and/or salad bar for the many rabbits currently residing in the area.

unkept house

Exhibit A: The ugly end of the house.

planting garden

This is where the bunnies will brunch.

However, a lingering winter and a cool spring coupled with busy schedules and another excuse for laziness kept us from maintaining the property as well as we should have, and in our absence the wildlife has flourished. Also, grime. The place is filthy, and before we can build it up we need to wash it down. Hence my looking for outdoor power equipment, specifically a hot water pressure washer at my local Home Depot?apparently a pressure washer hose packs more punch than the garden variety we have curled up in the corner (possible exceptions include top photo). Who knew?

This just in, Home Depot does not mess around when it comes to outdoor power. For instance, the DEWALT Pro Pressure Washers (4,200 psi pictured) look like they could really leave a mark? I mean clean really well!

Dewalt power washer

Step one of project ?Pretty It Up? is looking for a pressure washer rental (or something affordable enough to buy). Step two is making it happen. Stay tuned, true believers, and #DigIn!

The best Android phone you can buy, as of June 2013

HTC One, Galaxy S4

Find out which handset gets the Android Central recommendation

We're six months down the road from our last "best Android phones" roundup, and the smartphone landscape has altered dramatically. Back in December we crowned the Samsung Galaxy S3 king of all Android phones, on account of its responsiveness, broad availability and excellent performance across the board. A generation later, the Android space is dominated by two new heavyweights -- the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, with other contenders including the Xperia Z and ZL from Sony and LG's Nexus 4.

In mid-2013, buttery-smooth performance, beautiful screens, high-quality cameras, 4G LTE connectivity and Jelly Bean out of the box come as standard at the high-end. Competition is more fierce than ever, and that's resulted in some of the best Android hardware we've ever seen.

But there can be only one winner. Join us after the break to find out which phone takes the prize.

AT&T Is Finally Going to Let Everyone Video Chat Over Data

AT&T has caught a lot of flak for being excruciatingly picky about what apps can do video chat over data on what kind of plans. It's been equal parts annoying and confusing for everyone involved. But now, the carrier is about to simplify it by letting everyone do everything by the end of this year. Finally.

Powerful tornadoes strike in four central U.S. states

By Chris Francescani

(Reuters) - A massive storm front swept north through the central United States on Sunday, hammering the region with fist-sized hail, blinding rain and tornadoes, including a half-mile wide twister that struck near Oklahoma City. News reports said at least one person had died.

By 9:30 p.m. Central Standard Time, more than two dozen tornadoes had been spotted in parts of Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas and Illinois, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and local news reports. Hail stones, some as large as baseballs, were reported from Georgia to Minnesota, the NOAA said.

Fox News reported that one person was killed in Shawnee, Oklahoma, east of Oklahoma City.

Police in Shawnee could not immediately be reached to confirm the report.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin declared 16 counties of the state disaster areas, according to Jerry Lojka, a spokesman for the state emergency management department.

By late Sunday, power outages were being reported in several Oklahoma counties, according to the Tulsa World newspaper.

Meteorologists had been warning for days that a powerful front was expected to blast through the region, spawning potentially destructive twisters. The extreme weather is expected to continue on Monday, National Weather Service advisories said.

National Weather Service offices across the region issued one urgent warning after another, throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

An extreme weather system stretching from north Texas to Minnesota had been building for hours on Sunday when the day's first tornado touched down near Wichita, Kansas at 3:45 pm Central Standard time, according to a weather service alert.

Just after 6 p.m., the Norman, Oklahoma office posted a Twitter alert on a tornado about to strike Pink, a town on the edge of Oklahoma City.

"Large tornado west of Pink!" the post read. "Take cover RIGHT NOW in Pink! DO NOT WAIT!"

The storm prompted an unusually blunt warning from the central region of the National Weather Service, which covers 14 states.

"You could be killed if not underground or in a tornado shelter," it said. "Complete destruction of neighborhoods, businesses and vehicles will occur. Flying debris will be deadly to people and animals."

Pat Slattery, National Weather Service spokesman for the U.S. Central region, said the advisory was part of a new warning system being tested after a violent tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011, killing 158 people and injuring hundreds.

Slattery said the new advisory was reserved for severe tornadoes with the potential to form into "supercell" storms, which produce powerful winds and flash flooding. Supercells are considered to be the most dangerous of four categories of storms because of the extreme weather they generate.

A recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration assessment of the Joplin storm found that "when people heard the first tornado warning, they did not immediately seek shelter. They looked for a secondary source to confirm the tornado," Slattery said. "That got some people killed."

Sharks Top Kings 2-1: Logan Couture Overtime Goal Gives San Jose First Win In Series (VIDEO)

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Logan Couture scored a power-play goal 1:29 into overtime to help the San Jose Sharks bounce back from two losses in Los Angeles to beat the Kings 2-1 in Game 3 of their second-round series on Saturday night.

Dan Boyle scored a power-play goal early in the first period and Antti Niemi made 26 saves for the Sharks, who got the penalty calls to go in their favor down the stretch in this game.

Rookie Tyler Toffoli scored the lone goal for the defending Stanley Cup champion Kings, who had won six straight games since dropping the first two in the opening round in St. Louis. Jonathan Quick made 38 saves.

Game 4 is Tuesday night in San Jose.

Two nights after losing 4-3 on a pair of late power-play goals by Los Angeles in Game 2, the Sharks took advantage of their late-game chances on the power play. Tommy Wingels drew a hooking penalty on Robyn Regehr with 41.7 seconds left in regulation, and the task got even more difficult for Los Angeles when Trevor Lewis was called for goaltender interference when he crashed into Niemi with 4.5 seconds remaining.

That gave San Jose a 5-on-3 advantage for the first 1:19 of overtime. The Sharks couldn't convert with two extra men, but got the winner after Regehr came back when Patrick Marleau set up Couture in front.

Couture's first career playoff overtime goal came after he missed most of the second period with an injury when he crashed into the boards. He returned in the final minute of the second and then got the Sharks back into the series.

The Sharks survived a scoreless second period in which they played with a short bench for much of it. Marty Havlat, back for the first time since being knocked out of Game 1 in the first round because of a lower-body injury, left after the first period and didn't return.

Defenseman Scott Hannan missed time early in the period after sliding face first into the boards, and Couture was also out.

Despite having just 10 forwards for most of the period, the Sharks got the better chances with only a sterling pad save by Quick against Andrew Desjardins keeping the game tied at 1 heading into the third.

The sold-out crowd was in a frenzy from the start, hoping to help the Sharks rebound from the late-game collapse in Game 2 in Los Angeles that put them in the 0-2 hole. A disputed delay of game penalty on San Jose led to two late goals that gave the Kings a 4-3 win on Thursday night.

This time, the Sharks were on the positive end of a puck being played into the seats, getting a power play 90 seconds into the game when Jake Muzzin's clearing attempt went over the glass. It took just 4 seconds for San Jose to get its first power-play goal of the series as Joe Pavelski won the faceoff against Anze Kopitar back to Marleau, who fed Boyle for the blast from inside the blue line.

The Kings withstood that early storm, getting the equalizer shortly after killing a second power play midway through the period. Brad Stuart turned the puck over, trying to come out of the defensive zone, right to Toffoli, who skated in and beat Niemi with a backhand to make it 1-1.

NOTES: The Kings made a couple of lineup switches with F Tanner Pearson playing in place of Jordan Nolan, and Keaton Ellerby replacing Alec Martinez, who was on the ice for all three San Jose goals in Game 2. Pearson is the third Kings player ever to make his NHL debut in the postseason. ... The Sharks were fined $100,000 before the game for general manager Doug Wilson's comments Friday criticizing the suspension of F Raffi Torres for the rest of the series for his Game 1 hit that knocked out Jarret Stoll.
